La Neige Fondue

Oooh I just LOVE the title of this post! I live in an epicenter of the blizzard of '10 & I couldn't be more excited! I officially relocated here 31 years ago 2/16 & was greeted the morning after by a 2' snowfall. You can imagine a born & raised Cali girl awakening to a Winter Wonderland beyond dreams! My husband & I were ensconced at the Falls Church Quality Inn Governor on Rte 50. We brought along our cat Delilah & a big ol' goldfish in well, a goldfish bowl. This fish was a good 7" long counting his tail. Now, don't get excited, he was a goldfish. The goldfish survived the entire cross-country journey in the back of the retro Buick Riviera with the cat. The morning we awoke to the 2' of snow, he decided to die. Inconsiderate SOB! I mean, we pampered him 3k miles across the country so he could have a better life in Virginia. What kind of gratitude is that!? Anyhow, the cat survived to a ripe old age of 13.5 years but the dang goldfish gave up the ghost way too soon. Want to know what happened to him? Turn your children away for a moment. He went to the Fairfax County Water (& goldfish) Treatment Facility. I'm hoping he helped someone's corn stalks grow tall and fruitful. So, all of us staying at the hotel were unfamiliar with & unprepared for this development in the weather. We used pieces of cardboard to clean off our vehicles & provide traction for getting each other out of the parking lot. I, for the life of me, cannot remember where those pieces of cardboard came form. Maybe boxes in the trunk of our car? Search me. Anyhow, the spirit of comraderie & helpfulness was really neat. All for one & one for all. That was my introduction to life in Virginia. At least as it related to other visitors/newcomers to the area.

I digress. A reason I'm so excited about this blizzard is that I love the beauty snow makes of the landscape. The sparkling jewels that appear on ground that previously was dirt, dirty, dirtier. The reflection of moon shine on the snow. The glow that comes through the windows of my little home once the sun goes down. The crunch of one's foot on the icy purity of the snow. The way the snow homesteads on the bare branches of the Winter trees. The quiet that ensues once the ground is covered in snow. The sound of no sound.

I have been interrupted. TBC
